LUNA continues our 25+-year love affair with tango with the hauntingly beautiful compositions of Emmanuel Trifilio, our composer in residence and bandoneon player; the power of Julie Huang Tucker, our pianist, vocalist and a co-composer on PRIMAVERA VEZ; the perfectly placed beats of bassist Ali Cook, whose intimate vocals and poetic imagination created the magical DANCE ME arrangement; and the unerring musicality of first violinist Regino Madrid, our North Star.
EL FÍN – “A film score awaiting a film,” according to composer Emmanuel Trifilio.
Commissioned by violinist and co-founder of Emerson Avenue Salon Jackie Anderson.
LUNA ROJA – Emmanuel Trifilio’s portrait of Ukraine, the resilience and the tragedy.
commissioned by Jackie Anderson and premiered at Emerson Avenue.
DANCE ME TO THE END OF LOVE - the Leonard Cohen classic whose brave and
tender blooms belie their dark roots, reframed as a tango by arranger and vocalist Ali
Cook. The official music video of DANCE ME was shot in Buenos Aires in 2022 at the
recording studio IDEO and TEATRO EL FINO.
INVIERNO PORTEÑO - Winter in Buenos Aires, from Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons.
The second “season” recorded by QuinTango; Otoño Porteño (Autumn) appears on
TRIUNFAL.
MICHELANGELO 70 - Astor Piazzolla’s salute to the 70’s night club in Buenos Aires.
Pulsing energy propelled by Ali’s bass.
MILK AND HONEY - Emmanuel Trifilio wrote this waltz for Sasha Mikhlin during her
tenure as QuinTango’s first violinist. Sasha always said if she weren’t a violinist she
would be a dancer; we can hear her dancing away at the end of this waltz.
MELANCÓLICO – In 2000 QuinTango members Joan Singer, Bruce Steeg and Libby
Blatt went to Buenos Aires in search of tango music. Their first night they met Julian
Plaza at El Viejo Almacen. This arrangement was one of three given to QuinTango by
Maestro Plaza. It’s taken us 25 years to record it!
EL MONITO - Emmanuel Trifilio brings to life a vintage Buenos Aires street scene
spotlighting a mischievous hurdy gurdy monkey. Ann infectious arrangement of the
Julio de Caro classic.
PRIMAVERA VEZ, a tango written by Julie Huang Tucker and Emmanuel Trifilio to
celebrate Joan Singer’s 80 th birthday. Premiered as a surprise for the birthday girl at the
CD release concert for OBSESIÓN.
FERIADO - a non-studio bonus track recorded in Joan Singer’s kitchen as QuinTango’s
first submission to the NPR Tiny Desk contest. Emmanuel Trifilio’s song, written years
earlier in Buenos Aires, celebrates love and the impetuosity of youth. We couldn’t
resist sharing this beautiful vocal duo by Julie Huang Tucker and Ali Cook. The Tiny
Desk video is available on YouTube.
Special thanks to Jackie Anderson and Bill Ewing for their support for not only
QuinTango, but so many area musicians.
